Emerging Leaders

Building Strong Futures:
Youth Research & Engagement

Recognising that First Nations Jarjums are our future leaders and cultural custodians, Carbal Institute is dedicated to collaborating with schools and youth.

We strive to understand, appropriately respond to, and address emerging needs and trends to ensure the longevity and well-being of our communities.

Together, we aim to empower youth, preserve cultural heritage, and foster resilience for generations to come. This commitment to research focussed around youth ensures that current policies and overarching governmental strategic goals accurately reflect evolving trends and community priorities.

Building Strong School Partnerships for
Better Health and Education

Carbal maintains partnerships with more than 45 schools throughout the Toowoomba area, including Warwick, Goondiwindi, Texas, Stanthorpe, and Wallangarra. These connections are rooted in our renowned services including our comprehensive 715 mobile school clinics and the self-funded hearing health service, which has operated successfully for over 7 years, focusing on prevention and intervention.

Drawing on these established relationships, Carbal Institute uses this foundation to broaden our impact and involvement in initiatives like school retention and welfare support.

Mobile Health Fleet
& School Outreach Services

Carbal has integrated a Mobile Outreach Boomerang (‘MOB’) Van and refurbished ambulances into their fleet to provide services in a culturally sensitive and confidential manner, minimising disruptions to school environments, whilst maximising access for youth in a school environment.

Youth Engagement & Cultural Programs

Carbal facilitates outreach youth groups named Miyay and Marlu, designed to engage and build trust with youth through transformative programs that foster self-determination and motivation.

These programs address challenges related to cultural identity, involvement with the youth court system, and issues surrounding alcohol and drug usage, to name only a few.

Often, we employ a combination of methods to triangulate findings, thereby enhancing the validity and reliability of our results. This approach enables us to comprehensively address research challenges and contribute meaningfully to the communities we serve.
